By Mare Ahmed Wednesday, July 17th, 2024

Background

Elijah thought he would pursue a pure mathematical route after graduating from Vassar College, Elijah's trajectory shifted after taking a statistics class that opened his eyes to the potential of data in driving social change. It was during the summer of 2022 that his professor introduced him to Bluebonnet Data.

Elijah's path into the world of data and technology began with a passion for criminal justice reform. As a local organizer in early 2020, he worked with the local community organizations to help root out systemic issues through grassroots efforts.

Bluebonnet Fellowship

In May 2022, Elijah was matched to the West Virginia Civic Engagement Table. Despite being unfamiliar with the intricacies of Republican-dense areas, he dove headfirst into the project, leveraging his newfound skills to amalgamate disparate datasets crucial for informed decision-making.

Reflecting on his experience, Elijah underscores the profound impact of Bluebonnet Data on his journey. "It was moving to see how much data can impact an organization," he notes, emphasizing the importance of good visualization and the challenges of data accessibility and management in advocacy work. The Bluebonnet Fellowship not only equipped Elijah with technical skills but also instilled a deep commitment to using data for social good. "The fellowship motivated me to continue supporting advocacy organizations throughout my career," he affirms. Elijah's journey underscores the transformative potential of data in empowering marginalized communities and driving meaningful societal change.

Career in Data & Justice at the ACLU of Louisiana

With his skills in Python and R, Elijah continued his career at the ACLU in Louisiana as the first data analyst they had hired. Elijah was drawn by the opportunity to work in a state with limited data resources and a pressing need for transparency in law enforcement practices.

At the ACLU, Elijah spearheaded groundbreaking projects, including the Visualizing Police Violence in Louisiana dashboard. This initiative, the first of its kind in Louisiana, provided crucial insights and empowered communities with previously inaccessible information. The project's impact reverberated widely, garnering attention from media outlets and influencing legislative sessions and legal proceedings.

Beyond data analysis, Elijah is passionate about amplifying voices and advocating for policy reforms based on empirical evidence. His work exemplifies how quality data management can catalyze social change by making information accessible and actionable.

Elijah's story is a testament to the profound impact of blending data expertise with a passion for justice. As technology continues to evolve, individuals like Elijah play a crucial role in harnessing its potential to create a more equitable and informed society. By sharing his journey, Elijah inspires others to embrace data-driven approaches in advocacy, ensuring that every voice is heard and every cause is supported with clarity and conviction.
